Watering Your Newly Laid Turf

For newly laid turf to survive, it must be watered during dry spells for the first 28 days. Invest in a good sprinkler and a hosepipe, and ensure the soil is damp to a depth of 100mm. Water only in the early morning or early evening to prevent the sun from burning off the water. Avoid over-watering to prevent moss and grass diseases. After 28 days, the turf should be well-established and require no further watering.

Initial Mowing Of A New Lawn

The turf should establish itself within two to three weeks by growing its roots into the ground, provided it receives adequate watering during mild growing weather (spring, summer, and early autumn). During winter, the lower soil temperature may slow down the process.

Once confident that the turf has been established sufficiently, start mowing before the grass reaches 50mm. Adjust your mower to the highest setting and only remove the tips of the grass leaves during the first mow. Be careful not to mow too severely, as it can hinder root establishment and even lead to the death of the grass.

Essential Maintenance And Mowing Of An Established Lawn

You should mow your lawn once a week from spring to autumn and avoid leaving it unmowed for extended periods. During the main growing season, you should gradually reduce the height of the cut. However, don't cut more than 25% of the initial height at once, and never cut closer than 15mm. In late autumn, you should mow the lawn when frost is not expected but leave some growth to make it harder during winter. Gradually reduce the height in early spring until you reach your desired height.

Feeding An Established Lawn

The health and quality of a lawn depend mainly on its regular feeding. As with any living organism, lawns need consistent nourishment to stay healthy and resist disease. Grass plants become weak and thin without proper feeding, making them more susceptible to weed and moss growth. It is crucial to ensure a healthy lawn and provide the necessary nutrients in the spring when the first signs of growth appear. This promotes strong and healthy growth, which helps the lawn to thrive and outcompete weeds that may germinate later in the season.
